Born in 1933, the Lacoste legend began when the famous tennis player Rene Lacoste revolutionised the classical woven fabric, starched shirts of the tennis courts with his now classic Lacoste polo shirts.
The first Lacoste polo shirt was white, slightly shorter than other shirts of the day, with a ribbed collar and short sleeves, and it was made of a light knitted fabric called “Jersey petit piqué”. René Lacoste and André Gillier, the owner and chairman of France’s largest knitwear manufacturing firm at the time, teamed up and set up a company to make these shirts with the iconic crocodile logo embroided onto each one, thus giving birth to the Lacoste polo shirt.
The origin of the Lacoste Crocodile came about after a nickname that was given to Rene Lacoste by the American press. After making a bet concerning a suitcase made from alligator skin, Rene Lacose was nicknamed "the Crocodile", which also fitted with the tenacity that he displayed on the tennis courts, never letting go of his prey.
